How to transfer voice files for DNS Versions 4, 5, 6.

For Dragon Naturally Speaking

Problem:

You are using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and are wondering HOW TO transfer/move voice files from one computer to another?

Solution:

Note: Since the input characteristics of sound hardware vary widely between machines, it is generally recommended that you create a new user on each machine on which you install NaturallySpeaking. This will result in the best possible recognition. However, if you follow these instructions, all you will need to do is to run the Audio Setup Wizard once on your home/office/laptop/new system. This works in MOST cases but NOT ALL CASES so always backup your old files BEFORE you move them!

Here's a step-by-step description of what to do:

On your "Home" system:

  1. Make sure NaturallySpeaking is not running.
  2. If you have NaturallySpeaking 4.x, browse to your "\NatSpeak\Users\username\Current\" folder on your hard drive.
  3. If you have NaturallySpeaking 5.x, browse to your "\Program Files\Dragon Systems\NaturallySpeaking\Users\username\Current\" folder on your hard drive.
  4. Copy all files and folders in this location to your CD-R, Zip drive, network drive, or other removable media. If you are using diskettes, use WinZip (or equivalent) to copy all files and folders in this location to diskettes.

If you are using NaturallySpeaking 4.x, perform these additional steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (Start Menu - Run - Regedit)
  2. Click on the "+" sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then go to SOFTWARE, DRAGON SYSTEMS, NATURALLYSPEAKING, PROFESSIONAL 3.0, USERS
  3. Select the yellow folder with your "username".
  4. Go to the "Registry" menu and select "Export Registry File...".
  5. Export the resulting file to diskette (or other media) as well.

On your "Work" system:

  1. Make certain you have a valid license for the software and install Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
  2. Make sure NaturallySpeaking is not running.
  3. Restore your voice files (backed up contents of NatSpeak\Users\username\Current\ folder) from your removable media or network drive to a \NatSpeak\Users\username\Current\ folder on this hard drive.
  4. If you used a CD to transfer the files, use Windows Explorer to change the file properties to remove the Read-only attribute.
  5. Open the file called "Users.ini" located in the \NatSpeak\Users folder and add your transferred user to the list.
    Example: Scott=Scott
(Note: the name to the left of the "=" is the user name as it is listed in the Open User or Manage Users dialog box, to the right is the directory name. The directory name is usually the first 8 characters of the user name.)
  6. 6. Save the Users.ini file and close it.

If you are using NaturallySpeaking 4.x, perform these additional steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor (Start Menu - Run - Regedit)
  2. Go to the "Registry" menu and select "Import Registry File...". Point it to the location of the Registry file you exported from your "Home" system, and import it. You should get a "success" message upon completion. Close the Registry Editor.

On either version of NaturallySpeaking, perform these final steps:

  1. Start NaturallySpeaking and open your transferred user.
  2. In the NaturallySpeaking application window, go to the "Tools" menu (version 3.x, 4.x) or the Advanced menu (version 5.x) and select "Audio Setup Wizard".
  3. Run the Audio Setup Wizard. When done, save your speech files.
  4. You're done!

If you have multiple vocabularies, they should all be there. Just in case, check and make sure that everything transferred properly.
