Installing Dragon Naturally Speaking 5.0 on Windows XP

The Problem:

When installing Dragon Naturally Speaking on Windows XP, a warning dialog box appears (see attached Bitmap)

"This version of Dragon.. has a known compatibility issue with speech functionality when used with this version of Windows"

Clicking the continue button allows the user to install, but the program returns a "Speech.dll" error message when you attempt to run it.

Solution:

Before installing Dragon NaturallySpeaking, please use the following steps to install SAPI 4.0. If you have already installed Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 and are receiving the "Speech.dll" error message, please use the following steps to install SAPI 4.0 and then reboot your computer. You should then be able to run Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 without receiving this error message.

Steps to install SAPI 4.0:

Insert the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 5.0 CD into your CD-Rom drive, when the installation starts click Cancel to close it.


Open Windows Explorer by double-clicking the "My Computer" icon on the desktop or choose "My Computer" from the Windows Start menu.
Right-click on the CD-Rom drive and choose "Open" from the drop-down menu.
Open the "dns50" folder and then open the "redist" folder (Professional, Medical, Legal, and Public Safety) Open the "redist" folder (Preferred, Standard, and Essentials)
Double-click the file "spchapi.exe" to begin the installation of SAPI 4.0
